Additionally, they have caused a decline in the supply and quality of water and led to an increase in the cost of its production. In the last three decades, the United Arab Emirates has experienced rapid urbanization due to steady economic growth. Expansion of the economy is accompanied by a sharp rise in population, which has put pressure on its water resources. At present, the government has put in place strategies to reduce the population pressure on its scarce water sources by developing a system for managing the supply and demand sides for its resources. This research study aims at examining the current water management approach and challenges through qualitative and quantitative analysis. This paper draws attention to the need for the UAE to accelerate the integration of technology in production and supply, building public awareness, improving legislative framework on green building code, and collecting non-revenue water among others. This recommendation stems from a review of several publications on water management, which show that the future of water sustainability in arid regions lies in addressing demand-side problems and not supply-side challenges. It also is based on a survey that was conducted among professionals that work within the water and wastewater sector. More specifically, key tenets of this paper highlight the need for authorities to consider adopting smart water management principles that would see them operate more efficiently and create a greater and more positive impact on the country.Item Leadership and Its Impact on Organisational Behaviour in a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP)(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2019-11) Al Ali, BaderThis study seeks to critically investigate the impact that various leadership style have on organisational behaviours that are crucial in maintaining high organisational performance with respect to an NPP in the UAE. Two types of machine learning models namely classification and regression model were developed and implemented to predict the failure and abnormal behavior of the system. Nevertheless, the accuracy and performance of these models are questioned since they do not account for other system information. Therefore, for this paper multiple machine learning algorithms are investigated to predict system failure based on vehicle trips information as well as maintenance management historical data including preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance. Historical data of Dubai Toll Collection System is utilized to investigate multiple machine learning algorithms. Experiment is performed using Azure Machine Learning (ML) platform to test and assess the most efficient model that would predict the failure of system elements and predict the abnormality of the operation. Based on the experimental results, the predictions can be made to detect failure and forecast traffic amount. The models presented prove that data analytics can create new value in an ETC environment. The methods and tools used for modeling the prediction model can be generalized to be used in the rest of the ETC system also. As the amount of data grows daily, the model can be trained with more and more data as time passes. Therefore, the model can be re-generated from time to time to gain better results. There are no previous papers or literature reviews on applying artificial intelligence in predictive maintenance for Electronic Toll Collection failure forecast to perform a comparison of the effectiveness of Machine Learning Models. Despite having different performance results on predicting failures, most of the models produced close outcomes. Meaning no “perfect” machine learning algorithm that will produce good results at particular problem, in fact for each type of problem a specific algorithm is suited and might achieves good outcome, while another algorithm fails heavily. In addition, it relates to a great extent on the nature of dataset and the aim of model development.Item Enhancing the construction innovation practices using exploratory project to overcome construction innovation’s obstacle and improve the project performance(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2019-11) SAYYED, YAZANEven though the field of construction occupies a privileged place in a country’s economy, the innovation in the construction industry is suffering due to the low quality and slow growth comparing to other industries. In this project, TQM and Six Sigma DMAIC methodology were used to improve the process of paper bag making to make sure that the output of the manufacturing process meets the demands of customers. This dissertation was implemented in Falcon Pack, a company that is located in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The data collected from the Falcon Pack Company was used to make an analysis that would lead to a lasting solution for the company. The analysis was conducted using regression analysis, Pareto Charts, and the Fishbone diagrams. Various techniques were applied during data collection, which included the empirical measurements, observation, and questionnaire method. The analysis of data using Pareto analysis uncovered significant problems. Fishbone analysis allowed for the suggestion of the techniques for improvement using Six Sigma and TQM. Printing and packaging industries are continuously facing fierce competition and the challenge of meeting increasing demands for higher quality products at economical costs. The triumph of a business is directly related to how effective its implementation of continuous improvement (CI) is. For any manufacturing system, Total Quality Management (TQM) and Six Sigma are principal CI methodologies. An adequate understanding of these methodologies and their relationship provides industries with a competitive advantage. At Falcon Pack Company, the percentage of the waste is very high. This occurs when workers are not included in the continuous enhancement of the products. Workers might make mistakes, although most are caused by defective processes and systems. A lot of time is wasted during bag making, especially during maintenance, setting, and cleaning. Another factor is a low performance that is contributed by operating the machine below the ideal speed, starting the machine, and ending the roll. Sometimes the company is also concerned by the quality of bags that they produce. The redundant quality is majorly contributed by printing errors, slitting problem, paper quality, and other defects related to glue type. Data analysis was used to find out the primary roots for the high wastage. Afterward, fishbone diagrams were applied to navigate the root causes for each type of defect that result in a high percentage of waste, which are printing, paper quality, glue type, and slitting. Statistics and regression were used in finding out the means of improving the system. Furthermore, the factors that influence quality and performance in the industry such as the environment, machine breakdown, employees, and machine maintenance, all with respect to customer satisfaction, were analyzed. Afterward, solutions that could be embraced to solve the existing problems, and those that could have been implemented at Falcon Pack Company within three months were considered and implemented. The enactment of TQM and Six Sigma at Falcon Pack Company improved the availability of services, performance, and quality of the block bottom paper bags. The enactment of TQM and Six Sigma at Falcon Pack Company has improved the availability of services, increased performance, and better quality of the block bottom paper bags. It is also estimated that this utilization would grow to above 50% by 2030 because of the fast and consistent growth in economic activity and increase in population around the world. People tend to spend the greater part of their time in indoor spaces e.g., commercial and residential buildings. Improving energy efficiency and indoor environment comfort is necessary. Hence, the trend towards designing smart buildings that incorporate intelligent control systems has become the norm in the construction industry (Shaikh et al. 2016). Most of the current buildings nowadays were built prior the evolution of significant technological advancements such as the internet of things (IoT). Relevant technologies have recently evolved at a vast pace, allowing for the possibility to introduce enhancement on the performance of various building control systems such as electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, automated control systems, renewable energy, building envelope and building insulation, and others. Therefore, it is important to assess the association between retrofitting old buildings and thereby turning them into Smart Buildings and the effect that this exercise may have on their energy efficiency through a holistic method. Of particular interest in this approach is to evaluate the impact on the HVAC and lighting systems in order to optimize the energy usage in those systems. Based on the detailed literature review that has been carried out to complete this research, it was found that there are few researches that have been conducted in hot/humid climates especially in the gulf region or the United Arab Emirates related to the area of study. Therefore, the research aims to study how can retrofitting existing buildings in the UAE to become smart buildings save energy and reduce the energy demand. The findings of this research can be used to develop strategies that enhances the energy efficiency in existing buildings that have HVAC systems in the UAE and the gulf region. This research assesses retrofitting the Lighting and the HVAC systems to an existing office building by implementing energy conservation strategies along with smart sensors to reduce the energy demand. An actual field measurement was done to an existing governmental office building in Dubai, and energy conservation measures are discussed and analyzed to reduce the building energy demand, on the other hand, a computer simulation (IES VE) was used to build a model for an office building in Abu Dhabi and varies energy conservation strategies on the lighting system and the HVAC system were applied and simulated to understand the impact on the modelled building energy demand. The results for the energy conservation measures that are proposed for the case study building in Dubai showed that upgrading the HVAC system controls could achieve about 17% savings in the HVAC power demand, installing a chiller plant manager would achieve savings of 14%, retrofitting existing conventional AC with invertor AC would achieve 38% savings, and installing adiabatic cooling would save about 11% of the HVAC power demand. While applying different scenarios in the computer simulation of an office building in Abu Dhabi, the results showed that there is a potential of reducing the power consumption from the lighting system by 16% when replacing the fluorescent lights with LED, and 75% reduction in power consumption when using dimming system that is linked to the occupancy sensors, and 7% reduction when controlling the lights in the building via dimming system based on the external day lighting. The simulation also shows that controlling the cooling set point of the HVAC system can save up to 7% of the power demand, and when linking the HVAC operation with the building occupancy it can save up to 9%, also, using the VAV system can reduce 20% of the energy consumption of the HVAC system.Item Total Quality Implementation on Marine Transportation Association Under Natural Disruption of COVID-19 Pandemic(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2021-12) ASAD, NUHA JAMALThe research done analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on daily public transport ridership in the total quality of the most populated regions, this is done to measure quality assurance and organization strategy in critical environments and to look into the impact of COVID-19 on Marine transport.
