Item The effects of organizational culture on risk management during software development(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2009-06) Verma, CharuThe inevitable challenge of time, schedule, cost and scope in software projects has been a matter of concern even for powerful names like Microsoft and IBM. No matter how well equipped an establishment is, these projects come entrapped in risks. However, dealing proactively with these risks could truly be rewarding. There are several books, methodologies and tools which attempt to deal with Software Project Risk Management; nevertheless there is always another side to solving a problem, which the research is going to explore. The research is centered on the subject of studying whether it is the methodology or the work culture or both, which is responsible for the success or the failure of a software project. The subject of “Cultural Issues Impacting Risk Management” during software project development has been explored by very few authors with a narrow coverage. The main aim of this study is to obtain an understanding of key cultural barriers to effective Software Project Risk Management. The study begins with identifying the software project risks and risk behavior during various Software Development Life Cycles, followed by studying the means of culture emergence in an organization and how it influences the software development process. Moreover, the initial studies are researched further by means of interviews, surveys and case studies. The outcome of which is used to develop a support structure to aid organizations identify and assess Software Project Risks, by making it an integral part of the organizational conduct.Item Business intelligence implementation challenges in telecommunication industry(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2009-12) Abushsban, Osama Mohammed HoudaItem Customer Acceptance and Bank Employee Perceptions of Internet Banking(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2009-12) Aminzadeh, ArezooThe purpose of this research is to attain an in-depth understanding of the bank managers’ and employees’ perception of internet banking and investigate factors influencing customer adoption of internet banking (IB) and customer retention in the context of IB. Secondary research was conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of the issues and generate a model and hypotheses for achieving the aim of the research. Two distinct types of questionnaires for bank employees and customers were prepared, also questions were provided for interviews conducted with managers. Three banks were selected as case studies and sites for conducting the quantitative survey. Questionnaires were distributed through emails or hard copies. The collected data were analysed using SPSS software to test the hypotheses. The results show that usage of IB has significant impacts on the bank’s efficiency and effectiveness, market effects and profitability. Factors such as Demographic Characteristics (age, gender, and educational level), User Factors (customer knowledge, accessibility to the internet and prior experience with the internet) and User Perception of Usefulness (time saving and control) are influential in customer adoption of internet banking and factors including User Perception of Usefulness (cost saving and control), Customer Service Quality (responsiveness) and Online Information Quality (simplicity of use and navigation) have positive relationships with user satisfaction.Unlike many other research studies which focus on whether to identify the factors influencing customer adoption of IB or customer satisfaction, this study combines and investigate both and moreover investigates the relation between the influential factors and customer retention and loyalty to IB. Results show that user satisfaction is influential in user loyalty to the usage of IB. Furthermore it evaluates the bank employees’ and managers’perceptions of IB. According to the results, they perceive IB useful, efficient and effective, profitable, increasing customer satisfaction and market effects, reducing overall cost and no security issues.Findings from this study provides insights for the banks in Dubai by identifying the significant IB drivers, understanding key attributes for customer satisfaction and user loyalty to IB and recommendations to enhance the IB system to increase the number of online subscribers, motivate the users to utilize the IB in performing their transactions and retain the current users in order to reduce the overall cost of the bank, increase the volume of the sale, maintain good image in the market, sustain their competitive position in the market and increase the bank profitability.Item The contribution of computer software programmes to improving teaching processes for childrenwith down's syndrome: A study of special education centers in the United Arab Emirates(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2010-01) Ammar Al Ghafry, Hamama HamdanTechnology has always been considered as an empowering tool to guide learners during their studies. The results of the study demonstrate that effective use of computer software packages in special education facilities requires a joint effort between parents and teachers.Item Utilizing Web activities to generate revenue for Airports - with focus on Social Media(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2010-03) Al Agha, Mohamad S.Airports are being nowadays considered as Commercial profit centers rather than public cost centers. The nature of the airports being entities that offer a range of service for its customers and tenants such as travel, tourism, accommodation, shopping, parking and many more; makes it a huge potential for commercial revenue. Until today, web technologies where never used to its maximum potential in this industry, where there lies a huge potential for enhanced customer service as well as revenue sources. Moreover, while the web is being used effectively in many industries, very little research has been done on how to use the various web technologies specifically for the airport industry. This dissertation provides an in depth case study on utilizing Web technologies – Social Media specifically – for revenue generation opportunities in the Airport industry. The analysis carried out in this dissertation on Abu Dhabi International Airport, lays out a well-structured methodology for analyzing the level of web utilization of an airport on the net, identifying opportunities for increasing such presence, and assessing the potential impact of such opportunities. A thorough analysis was done to identify how the various forms of web activities can be best utilized for airports. A number of web activities were identified as potential revenue source and were explored for monetization strategies. A set of recommendation are offered to airports management to maximize their benefit of their web presence and to open new forms of revenue and unique customer service. A first in the world implementation of an innovative service using the Social Media platform twitter and integrating it with the airports Flight Information Display system was introduced in this dissertation and holds a huge potential for revenue using the advertising business model proposed and built behind it. The findings of the analysis and the implementation of the mentioned Social media application, lays the groundwork for further research on implementing and measuring the ROI on the various monetization strategies.Item IT Governance in Dubai Government Organizations(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2010-05) Hassan Al-Ali, Waleed AhmedNowadays, having an effective IT department that is aligned with the business needs and aspiration has become top priority in organizations striving to stay ahead. To deal with this issue, the concept of IT Governance (IT) emerged as part of the overall concept of Corporate Governance (CG) (Brown, 2006; ITGI, 2009). Researchers have found that whenever effective ITG practices exists, IT delivers added value services that support the organization in meeting their operational and strategic needs. In addition to higher return on investments and higher stakeholders satisfaction rates (Huang and Hu, 2007).This research investigates ITG practices in Dubai Government organizations in terms of level of awareness, current practices and the main drivers. In addition, the research aim to construct a list the critical success factors (CSF) leading to effective ITG practices in Dubai Government organizations which in returns assist in Dubai Government efforts toward excellence. The research literature review will present a detailed overview of the concept of ITG and how it emerged from a bigger concept which is CG. It will also investigate the general main drivers and benefits of ITG. In addition, a review of current industry recognized ITG practices will be conducted providing the base knowledge to study and be able to analyze ITG practices in Dubai government which will be through case study.A case study based on semi-structured interviews was conducted on a group of Dubai government organization along with in interview with the head of IT audit from Dubai Financial Audit Department (FAD). In general, the level of ITG practices in Dubai Government organizations is between low to medium, however there are organizations with more mature ITG practices that will be presented in the paper. The concept of ITG is recognized in Dubai Government organizations, however the establishment and effectiveness varies between them. Those with more established practices have done it differently; they have utilized a group of formal and informal ITG practices to meet their organizations unique requirements. In addition, they considered other factors such as the culture, organizational structure, skills and management engagement. The most common formal IT practices in Dubai Government organizations are COBIT, ITIL,KPI, BSC, ISO27001 and PMI along with other internal ITG practices that lead to improved effectiveness even without the use of formal ITG practices. COBIT is the main framework due to the fact that is being used by FAD in their IT audits where the feedback from FAD head of IT audits will be discussed in this regard.Based on the discussions, analysis and comparisons; recommendations were provided to the interviewed organizations and to Dubai government in general to improve ITG practices. The main recommendation is to ensure management support and engagement to improve the presence of IT in an organization. Also, to deal with ITG initiatives as a culture change process considering all the surrounding effects. In addition, there is no one fits all ITG framework, every organization needs to build its centralized overall framework from applicable mature ITG practices that satisfy its requirements in a continuous improvement life cycle process.Item How can Electronic Medical Record Help improve Health Services in Emirate of Abu Dhabi?(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2010-05) Al Musabi, MonaHealth Information System is the current most widely discussed topic in Abu Dhabi hospitals; as the implementation of such a system is still being rolled out to all hospitals and primary health care centers; also, let us consider the fact that those kinds of implementations are relatively new in the Middle East area. How to improve it? Or what are the lessons learnt? This Thesis consist of 5 chapters that discuss how other authors in other countries have discussed how their HIS or EMR implementations have benefited the organizations; challenges associated with those implementations and how to overcome them in the future for better practice. To get a sense of reality check; I have conducted a survey in a number of hospitals and clinics; there’s a whole chapter that discuss the survey analysis and findings with regards to HIS implementation in Abu DhabiItem How one-to one E-learning enhances and affects high school students’ learning performance in the UAE(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2010-06) Al-Kendi Salem, Fatima MohammedThe one-to-one E-learning solution has become a significant tool of 21st century teaching art within UAE. It also has become the language that UAE youth speak. Therefore, this paper discusses how this new injected solution affected and enhanced high school student learning performance based on a case study of the first high school in UAE which implemented this kind of solution for their students from K-10 through K-12. The paper also displays how students in high school age are attracted to such a way of learning, that transferred them from the old fashion learning environment where student needs to come early to the class and sit all the day listening to what teachers say, to a more motivated and energetic learning environment.Furthermore, the way teachers participated in implementing such a solution by designing affected curriculum for the students that is integrated and fit within one-to-one solution, added valuable value to the teaching process and gave more confidence to the teachers, because they consider themselves part of it. However, teachers need to be engaged in curriculum design of one-to-one E-learning solution, because from the daily interaction with students they can extract creative curriculum to student. Moreover, such a learning solution needs the maximum support from the management in financial, educational and technical side in order to succeed. Finally, more studies need to be conducted on the influence of the usage of one-to-one solution of E-learning on teachers’ expectations and how such a solution affect teachers career of opportunities and chances.Item IT Outsourcing vs. Smart-sourcing in the Utility Industry(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2010-09) Al Bloushi, Shereena YousefBusinesses turn to outsource their information technology activities to third parties for different reasons. This research has been conducted to determine the challenges organizations and companies are encountering because of relying on IT sourcing and finding ways in which the challenges can be addressed. The research was done by relying on a case study concerning a company “X” which is a government utility organization to see how efficiently outsourcing has been done on organization “X”. The organization that was investigated was one of the pioneer firms in United Arab Emirates that started with IT outsourcing. The examination brought along with it limitations for the research, limitations such as political, economic and technological with respect to the utility industry. These limitations indicated that appropriate IT resourcing could raise the assumptions with respect to IT outsourcing. The results of the research have also indicated that significant differences in structuring the IT outsourcing may hinder the success of the IT outsourcing agreement while a successful management and governance may stabilize the relationship, expectations, strategies, visions and operations.Item The role of IT governance in enhancing the competitiveness of for-profit private schools' business(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2010-12) Jasim, Alaa HIT governance is one of the topics that has emerged suddenly and became an important information issue in the information technology and business era. Many organizations around the world have realised the importance of formal IT governance practices to attain the generated business value, overall organizational effectiveness through IT. Underlying goals for adapting ITG include improving business performance and attaining competitive advantage over competitors in the same business sector. This exploratory study examines the dearth of empirical evidence about ITG in practice in an attractive for profit private school business sector that has not been explored prior to this work. It examines the level of Senior management’s awareness regarding IT and ITG, how IT governance is implemented, its status in the current settings of for-profit private school business, the inhibitors, enablers, and perceived outcomes of ITG in a for-profit private school business context. This paper contains interpretations regarding existing theories and concepts, models and finding of other researchers in the field of T governance and hence also presents the research questions that are derived from it. Multiple research strategies were considered in order to explore how for-profit private school business are implementing IT governance and to analyse the relationship between these implementations and achieving competitive advantage and business value. Just like any other industry, the for-profit private school business’s reliance on IT in achieving organizational effectiveness and efficiency has increased as a form of sustaining competitive advantage in a hyper business sector. Hence, resulting in higher IT investments attempting to create news ways of competition to the school business. In spite of the awareness of for-profit private schools of the vitality of IT in creating value to their business, these schools still show that the awareness of ITG related aspects and its effects on the organizations has not yet reached an acceptable level. The schools show a lack of understanding of the way IT business value can be measured, and the role of IT in innovation that can bring in business opportunities, hence not realising the full potential of value created via. IT. However, the current context of the for-profit private school business sector is promising and does show that there are a number of good ITG implementations and practice in place, which were basically a result of reaction taken to different IT related aspects over the years. It is evident that schools are attaining competitive advantage basically through the ITG implementations more than the affect of the management’s awareness and support, and more than the affect of increasing enablers and decreasing inhibitors on achieving value. The results show a strong positive relationship between the implemented ITG practices, ITG maturity levels and, the outcomes of IT in creating value. Therefore, the potential of IT is yet to be exploited in for profit private school business. The interest in IT indicates a positive environment for greater innovation to the use of IT to deal with the challenges facing the education services in the UAE and for the use of ITG to gain the proposed value expected from IT while achieving competitive advantage. This leads to the urgency for schools to consider reformulating the working practices of ITG to ensure IT is bringing in the proposed value to the organization. Based on the results of this study, a number of recommendations are suggested to school owners, directors and to educational authorities, in order to ensure higher levels of value return on IT and IT related aspects to achieve competitive advantage. Senior management need to take ownership of IT governance in for profit private school business and to be held accountable over all IT aspects. IT should be considered a strategic partner and ITG needs to be part of the overall school governance. Moreover, there is an urgency of increasing senior management’s awareness of the importance of IT and ITG through good training, orientation, or external advisory. The need to use formal ITG frameworks to consider ITG from a holistic perspective that can be used to enhance the value of IT for the organization and lead to being at a competitive edge. Hence, Educational Authorities from a statistical position should consider the importance of ITG in both public and private schools to attain the value created through IT and provide all the necessary support required to raise the awareness and realization of the necessity of considering ITG in schools. Further research needs to be conducted to explore the reasons impeding the for profit private school business from realizing the role of IT in creating innovations, and the reasons for the absence of professional IT-business value measurement metrics that hinder the realization of IT’s potential in creating value. In addition, to exploring the actual value created via effective ITG implementations in isolation of any other factors.Item The Generated Business Value from IT: the Case of Fostering Organizational Innovation(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2010-12) Anaya, Luay AhmadThe difficult situations that emerged during the economic downturn over the recent years put an increasing pressure on executives to create more value from IT, as a significant amount of money is being allocated to IT. This was a plausible reason for shifting IT from a supporting function that facilitates business work and automates it to a fundamental player in driving business development and growth. This dissertation is undertaken to study how organizations can maximize the return value from their investment in IT, and what are the significant benefits that organizations can obtain from IT to make their business grow. Then the dissertation focuses into one business benefit which is fostering organizational innovation. Accordingly, this study aims to examine the role of IT-based knowledge management systems in triggering and supporting business innovation, in addition, it aims examining the role of enterprise management information systems in developing innovative business practices. Research for this study included a review of current literature on the returned business value from investing in IT capabilities, as well as reviewing the literature in organizational innovation and its practices. The research also included five case studies each done by interviewing number of senior IT staff, working at these cases. The major findings revealed that there were indeed number of knowledge management practices that used and helped organizations in triggering and supporting business innovations, as well the enterprise information systems had the ability to introduce innovative business practices like innovative processes. The conclusion suggests that there were significant business benefits that could be generated from investing in IT, including fostering organizational innovation, but there was an inadequate exploitation for some of these benefits. Therefore, the study recommends exploiting the benefits by more integrative work across-functional business units and to use the latest advances in IT to communicate and collaborate to diffuse the knowledge that can be applied in business innovations.Item Managing uncertainity in strategy execution in the transportation sector of the United Arab Emirates(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2011-02) Al Amri, Abeer Mohd MohsinThe purpose of this research is to identify strategies for resolution and better management of uncertainty. Uncertainty exists in many forms. Some uncertainties can be managed while others cannot. This dissertation studies the management of strategic uncertainty in a large organization RTA and evaluates its impacts on strategy execution. It then considers uncertainty in relation to corporate communication, knowledge and contract management. The secondary research develops propositions about uncertainty based on literature review of generic theories of the environment and strategy execution under various uncertainties. Uncertainty is categorised based on the levels of uncertainty and a group of experts selected from two main agencies (public transport & roads and traffic) are interviewed and the data analyzed based on grounded research methods. Discussion on the propositions in the light of the study’s findings shows that the transportation sector is a highly uncertain and complex environment, however, RTA has managed to contain uncertainty within acceptable levels. Uncertainty persists due to internal factors including project interdependencies, lack of human resources development plans and the need for more information and integrated planning. These constraints and setbacks often lead to ad-hoc requests and random changes in priorities. External uncertainty is related principally to resources and demand changes The recommendations cover internal strategies such as integration strategies, adopting an organic mangement system and focus on knowledge management processes and corporate information needs to minimize uncertainty. It is proposed that further studies are conducted in the domain of business and strategic management.Item Exploring Key Success Factors in Implementing Project Management Processes to Ease Strategy Execution(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2011-02) Saeed Al Huwaidi, Shahd AhmadThe given research paper explores on the staff perception of project management versus the commitment to the actual work. Change resistance in the workplace is increasing and the given research analyzes how to overcome resistance and thus lead the way for acceptance. The methodology employed involved use of books as secondary sources of information along with a survey of 50 respondents using questionnaires (the respondents were senior employees (the middle management and their subordinates). The sample contained 35 men and 15 women with 40 of them from the same organization and the other 10 from different organizations. Qualitative analysis was done on the information from books while the survey results analysis was carried out using the excel spreadsheet. Findings show that most of the employees’ resistance to project implementation is closely linked to the perceptions they have. The acceptance or resistance of project implementation largely depends on the incentives, motivation and the general treatment of the employees. If the employees perceive the project as an extra work, time consuming, affecting their job security and social security, resistance is inevitable. Making use of books as sources of information and a survey in the UAE using questionnaires; the results of the research reveal that motivation, incentives and training and education along with a clear communication of the benefits of the project to the organization may ease project acceptance.Lack of communication in regard to the benefits of the project, extra workload to the employees without reward or recognition, lack of training and education regarding the project, job security issues and social detachment from workmates have been established as some of the reasons for project implementation resistance. The staff perception in regard to project implementation either facilitates acceptance or resistance. The survey results indicate that job satisfaction and manager rated work performance influence workplace project implementation. The recommendations made seek to overcome change resistance in workplace and thus retain high productivity in the given organization. The management should assign employees’ tasks in areas of their expertise, thus reducing the level of incompetence among them. Furthermore, there is a need to adjust the project activities to fit in the current workplace environment to avoid disruption of the existing work activities. Thus, the requirement to develop a channel for airing hardships among employees has been suggested if success is to be realized while implementing a project.Item A Study on Educational Technology in Dubai Challenges and Suggested Solutions(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2011-03) Kamel Iran, Hisham MohammedThe purpose of this paper is to discuss how education in UAE is better with the presence of technology, how advanced is it now? How it can be better? Worldwide some barriers may arise before integrating high technologies into today's classroom. A couple of the most famous barriers are the cost of software, hardware and the availability of training for teachers, but The UAE government has the financial resources to implement technology at schools and the Ministry of Education in the UAE is striving to keep up with educational standards adopted all over the world. And once H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al-Maktoom said "Education, Education, Education" while presenting Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 stating that it’s one of his most strategic goals in the UAE development. In line with this trend to integrate information and communication technologies (ICTs) in education, UAE has embraced to use technologies in all educational levels to facilitate learning and teaching, and increase access to learning opportunities.I conducted a survey to examine how education in UAE is better with the implementation of technology from the perspective of both teachers and students from grade 7 to 12 in Dubai’s schools and how it can be even better. The methodology was both qualitative and quantitative as I have done primary research on education technology in other countries and attended an International conference about Information and Communication Technology in Education to have an idea about the current status of educational technology worldwide. Later on, questionnaires were sent out to both Dubai’s students and teachers about technology in education in UAE, 508 valid responses were received and analyzed.New findings within this research show that teachers and students feel that education was improved with the use of technology in education at Dubai’s schools. Teachers and students have the required technological skills and the acceptance to integrate new technologies in education that can add value. Teachers need professional training on how to improve education by technology as well as students need access to different technologies in schools.Item Sustainable IT Implementation in UAE(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2011-03) Tahhan, Jamil MGlobal warming and other environmental issues have raised humankind’s awareness towards the planet and viability of the coming generations. Many movements have been taken to force the companies to monitor their environmental impacts. They aim to save the planet and the natural resources to ensure that the coming generations can continue living and developing in our planet. This has created the concept of sustainability. Researchers have seen that organizations that adopt sustainability will have a competitive advantage over their competitors which will ensure their longterm run. This research will investigate the sustainable IT concept in UAE organizations in terms of level of awareness, main drivers and current practices. In addition, it aims to determine the main factors for successful and smooth implementation which in turn will assist other organizations toward their sustainability. The literature review will present a detailed overview of the concept of sustainability and sustainable IT. It will also build business case for sustainability, investigate the main drivers for sustainable IT and explore the Global reporting initiative’s (GRI) indicators for sustainability reporting. In addition, a review of most used sustainable IT practices will be conducted providing a solid base for analyzing the current sustainable IT practices in UAE.Three case studies based on semi-structured interviews were conducted on a group of Dubai and Abu Dhabi governmental organizations. In general, the level of sustainable IT awareness in these organizations is between low to medium with social responsibility of IT remaining weak. With regarding to practices, they are almost equal to levels of awareness.Research has showed that organizations are focusing more on the economical sustainability rather than environmental sustainability. Moreover low public awareness about sustainability made companies less concern about their social responsibility.Based on the discussions, analysis and comparisons; recommendations have been provided to the interviewed organizations and to the UAE government in general to improve sustainable IT practices. The main recommendation is to raise the awareness about sustainable IT and its benefits for the organization and the whole society. The government should create this awareness within the public and the organizations. Moreover, IT departments should make the management aware of the benefits of sustainable IT to have their support during the implementation.Item The Use of Technology in Raising Awareness:An investigation into E-learning Systems for Helping Children with Diabetes(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2011-05) Hammad Al-Mansoori, Mona Ali AbdullahDiabetes is a common and costly condition disease that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Recent studies have shown remarkable increases in diabetes during the last decade. This has attracted many researchers and doctors to invest in E-Learning area in order to contribute in many ways to help people who are suffering from diabetes and other diseases. However, there are not enough studies covering telecommunication and IT service provider organizations published for forming and implementing Project Portfolio Management process especially in the Gulf Countries. The aim of this research paper is to investigate how PPM can be utilized by organizations to decrease the failures of the major IT Projects in. The research is considering “Company A” as a case study to analyze it throughout different reviews. This organization went through a strategic change which shifted their IT projects direction and its management decided to implement PPM to maintain their competitive advantage in the market. The research methodology covers qualitative, quantitative and empirical and observation data gathering and analysis. The research findings indicate that although the reasons for IT project failures are apparent to most researchers and business owners, the rate of success is still disappointing. The research indicated that these factors like scope, time and cost of a project are not enough to control IT projects and obtain the expected result. However, PPM looks at vast areas like synchronization of projects’ strategies, goals, values, revenue and benefits to fit the organizational long term objectives. The research considers the IT Projects and Technology complexity which are another reason for the failures. The current study concludes that organization should always recognize its capabilities and external environmental factors to identify its sensitivity to different market variables. Also, the surveyed sample shows the importance of associating the PPM tasks to individual so it is aligned with the strategic objectives. Human resource function is vital to develop the required skills according to the new requirements of the organization projects.Mainly, it is suggested by this paper that the association of these factors should be investigated in future studies using a larger sample of questionnaire respondents and to different telecommunication organizations.Item Innovation KPIs in the UAE(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2011-09) Ebrahim, Mohammed YousifOrganizations have always searched for approaches that will bring them with benefits and will give them competitive advantages over their market opponents. Recently, organizations recognized the importance of innovation to their success. Consequently, innovation became one of the success factors to be considered and embedded in strategies. Measuring, monitoring and controlling innovation have always been a challenge. To address this issue, researches recommend using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure organizations’ progress towards their innovation strategies. This research will examine the concept of innovation KPIs in the UAE. It will investigate the level of innovation acknowledgement, innovation triggers and current innovation practices. Furthermore, the research will identify the major factors for innovation KPIs implementation to be considered by organizations seeking to rely on innovation. The literature review will provide detailed understanding on both innovation and KPIs topics. It will explore the benefits and components of innovation. Furthermore, innovation theories, models, practices, and triggers will be studied. Similarly, KPIs benefits, principles, selection criteria and implementation practices will be presented. In addition, the literature review will examine the weaknesses, reasons for KPIs implementation failures and KPIs impact on individual and team effectiveness. At last, the developed model for using KPIs to control and measure innovation will be explained.Three case studies were conducted on organizations representing private and semi-government sectors to investigate the use of innovation KPIs. In addition, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of an innovation institute was interviewed to explore more viewpoints. In general, organizations took substantial steps towards implementing innovation and controlling it by using KPIs; however, the levels of maturity vary from an organization to another. The three organizations had well understanding of innovation and its KPIs; however, their implementation motives and approaches differed. Mostly, organizations specify their innovation goals in their strategy which is controlled by Balanced Score Card KPI implementation methodology. The research showed that this implementation model has positive impacts on individuals and teams, while the negative impacts were limited. The information gathered from the case studies was discussed, analyzed, and compared. Consequently, recommendations and suggestions were provided for the interviewed organizations to improve innovation KPIs practices. The main recommendation provided was to define innovation clearly to standardize its expectation between employees. Similarly, organizations should incorporate innovation in their strategies from which the KPIs are drilled and cascaded to organizational functions. In addition each organization has its specific areas of improvement to be considered to have a comprehensive approach of innovation KPIs implementation.Item Application of Machine Learning Algorithms to Enhance Money Laundering and Financial Crime Detection(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2011-09) HAMDALLAH, KHALID WAJIH TURKI; Professor Sherief AbdallahThe underlying idea of this thesis is to understand the current challenges and difficulties that financial institutions face with regards to the prevention and detection of financial crime and suspicious activities in relation to fraud, money laundering and terrorist financing. It sheds light upon contemporary developments in financial crime activities and the anti-money laundering regulations, policies and frameworks that have been set in order to address this issue and overcome the associated challenges and difficulties.
