Item Employees Understanding Of Excellence Model and Its Effect on the Organizational Performance(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2016-05) Daoud, NourExcellence practices have nowadays became an essence of organizational success and continuity and a mandate in many government departments. However, and as those practices are relatively new and take over many traditional processes and methodology, many organizations struggle if not fail to apply and adopt excellence models. The most common organizational model is the EFQM Excellence Model (European Foundation of Quality Management), it gives clear guidelines that transforms organizational performance, spotting light on weak areas and processes which need improvement and as well on strong ones that need to be maintained. Applying the model also facilitates benchmark practices, as it unifies the way performance results are measured, making it easier for an organization to compare with best practices. It also boosts the organization’s image as a benchmark target for other organizations, once they have achieved astonishing results. In order to apply this model, an organizational wide awareness needs to be raised, training has to be provided to employees and managers should be on board alongside with their subordinates and all employees, as applying the model and following those practices becomes more of a culture and a unified mind-set rather than tasks and responsibilities that some might prefer to escape or avoid, which is where some obstacles might raise, as discussed in this paper in more details.Item ESTIMATING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT FROM CABLE WASTE IN DEWA(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2016-05) Al-Amiri, ReemThe study topic is the use of the lifecycle assessment for estimating the environmental impact from cable waste in Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). The topic is of interest given the fact that asset management for the utility cables is a key goal in achieving performance that is highly sustainable, while the cables are being kept in service the longest possible. This is only achievable with asset management that is dedicated throughout the lifecycle of the cable, including the procurement stage, operation, installation, maintenance as well as replacement. With that view, the main objective of the analysis is assessing the environmental impact of the cable materials and identifying how the LCA can be applied to address the cable waste problem. That entails identifying the major waste contributing materials among the XLPE, copper, aluminum and PVC. Regarding the applied methodology, the Life Cycle Asset is used. The approach is defined as a means for a systematic evaluation of service or product system environmental aspect through all the stages of their life cycle. In addition, the LCA offers an adequate mechanism for the decision support on the environment. The performance of a reliable LCA is also identified as important in achieving the economy in Asset life cycle. In respect to the authority being analyzed, the DEWA case is used. DEWA is a provider of services for electric power systems. It was established in 1992. Its operations include designing and commissioning of switching as well as protection products for power generation, transmission and distribution. Finally, the method applied in the empirical analysis involves identifying the quantity of the waste that was removed from cable used in the field. Further, the analysis entails allocating an environmental impact factor for each material based on the 2008 metals impact report. Further, it entails identifying the proportion of the material use in the Authority ’s operations based on the 2008 global materials use in cables production. With that, the total impact of each material is computed in view of the impact factor and the proportion of use. In view of the analysis findings, it is indicated that the XLPE waste problem is the most prevalent compared to the other waste materials. Thus, recommendations are made for the authority to focus on using less of the material or use a lighter quality that would have reduced impact. The recommendation is in line with the extreme importance for the asset management for any organization that is asset intensive. This has a huge asset life influence and it fulfills a business objective. Finally, the key benefits that the study identified would accumulate for the business with effective asset management include cost, risk and performance balancing and corporate objective aligning with the spending decisions.Item Implementation Six Sigma Into Traffic Management System In Dubai(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2016-05) Al Nuaimi, Afra MohammedThe research concerns the implementation of the Six Sigma in the signal system of Dubai's traffic. This concept has been defined as a statistical tool that has recently become a useful framework for business management. It has assisted in the achievement of quality improvements, reduction of costs, and improvement in the customer loyalty together with the attainment of the desired results for any entity. The research has commenced by giving a brief background study on Dubai with a particular emphasis on the transport system of the country. Because the state plays a host to people with different backgrounds, as well as, cultures, it is imperative for the government of the day to provide an efficient system with it notably being on its agenda. The study has used a criterion of identifying critical methodologies regarding the deterrents of traffic management in Dubai. It has thus limited its scope to the identification of issues around road orientations, traffic signals, geometry together with topography. This would substantially boost the processes towards the creation of a unique transport methodology thus easing traffic congestion and sustaining a likely future. This creates several objectives for conducting the research that includes whether the implementation of the system will reduce road accidents, congestion, travel time and also the cost associated with travel. Lastly, the research has come up with the proposal that the Six Sigma concept should be implemented by Dubai. Its results have shown that the speed of the vehicles particularly at the intersection points has immeasurably led to the occurrence of more accidents. In spite of the above challenges, Dubai has been identified as one of those countries having the best management of their traffic systems thus making a tremendous transformation of the Middle East region. The study also gives some recommendations geared towards the achievement of a systematic, as well as, a disciplined system. Lastly, the study experienced some limitations in coming to the deductions so far made. This is because Dubai has not in itself conducted efficient research on the area. The results drawn from the secondary research may not, as a result, be sophisticated, as well as, accurate.Item Improving Healthcare Services by Quality Function Deployment (QFD)(The British University in Dubai (BUiD), 2016-05) Al Memari, Ahmed SalemThe tools of the Total Quality Management (TQM) have gained high importance due to increasing competitions in the healthcare industry. As a selling approach needs to be based on management assurance, this has to be applied hospital-wide with a systematic approach for the continuous quality improvement. The observations from the selected hospital for this research showed that it is struggling to meet customers' expectations in some areas. The quality function deployment (QFD) is a systematic technique for designing services or products that are based on the customers' needs. Therefore, the tool is widely used in almost all industries. This research paper elaborates on the reasons the quality function deployment (QFD) is selected as a technique to develop a total quality healthcare model. With the help of a hospital-based case study, this research paper discovers the possibility of using the quality function deployment (QFD) in the healthcare service. The paper showed some limitations of the conventional quality function deployment (QFD) outside the physical industrial production and presented modifications as an extension of the quality function deployment (QFD) in the healthcare service. Based on the outcomes, a total quality model was developed to guide the healthcare management in their total quality development.
