University, Industry and Governmental Leaders and Teachers 1 Perceptions on How the Triple Helix Components can Benefit 2 STEM Education and STEM careers in the UAE
Abstract
Purpose: The main purpose of the study was to explore the perceptions of leaders and teachers 5
from the university, industry and public school sectors regarding how the Triple Helix 6
components can benefit the formal and informal STEM education programs and future STEM 7
careers in the UAE. 8
Methodology: The researcher employed a qualitative approach for this study. The researcher 9
utilised semi-structured interviews with 7 instructors from universities, 7 instructors from 10
STEM related industry programs, and 15 teachers and leaders from public schools with STEM 11
programs. 12
Findings: The findings of this study included themes regarding how the Triple Helix 13
components can benefit formal and informal STEM education programs and STEM careers 14
based on the participants’ responses. The themes include how the Triple Helix can benefit 15
STEM education and STEM careers in the following capacity: 1) resources and professional 16
development, 2) awareness, motivation, and enrichment, 3) coordination and collaboration 17
between university-industry-government, and 4) technology. 18
Implications: This study will contribute to enhancing policies for formal and informal STEM 19
educational programs and STEM careers with the addition of the Triple Helix components as 20
a vital component. 21
