Abstract
Modern organisations are under extreme pressure
to keep current and to cope with the continuously
changing work environment. Therefore, employee
creativity and innovation are no longer a choice; rather,
they are necessary. The purpose of this research paper
is to examine the role of the institutional environment
of work organisations in shaping employees’ readiness
creativity. The study involved 600 full-time employees
working in police organisations in the United Arab
Emirates (UAE). The employees were randomly
selected and surveyed using a self-administered
questionnaire. The results uncover that the institutional
environment and its four factors are significantly and
differently related to the creativity of employees. The
superior-subordinate relationship is found to be the
most important component of the work environment in
predicting creativity. The implications of the findings
for both researchers and practitioners are also discussed
in the paper. This study emphasizes the importance of
managing the human/social side of the business as a
significant determinant of employee creativity. Similar
to the technical aspects of work, it must be reflected/
embedded in the functional, business, and corporate
level strategies, especially the superior-subordinate
relationships. The current study is the first of its kind in
the Middle East that attempts to examine the institutional
environment-creativity link in police organisations.
